Hello lovely readers, What do you like to wear while you are doing aquatic sports? How about to the beach? How do you rock your aquatic fashion?
I was lucky enough to spend the weekend with friends at the beach in Tulum. On the last day, I sat there and observed as people sunbathed and went to go do some aquatic activities. Yes, I was the creepy girl at the beach staring at people from behind my aviators!
As I watched I got to thinking about aquatic fashion. What we wear to do aquatic sports or spend time on the water is mostly dictated by functionality, but also by how we want to look and feel while doing something that we love. As you know, we here at Swish are dedicated to bringing you the best of both worlds and have spent countless hours researching wetsuit functionality as well as fashion to bring you our fashionable wetsuits. That is why I am bringing you today's blog, which is all about Iconic Moments in Women's Aquatic Fashion!
1) The Invention of the Bikini
No mention of aquatic fashion would be complete without the mention of the infamous bikini. The bikini was created by Louis Reard, a French engineer, in 1946.
2) Venus on the Half Shell
Let's take it back even further into antiquity shall we? Venus is the Roman goddess of love and beauty. In Botticeli's "Birth of Venus" she is depicted as being born out of the sea a full grown women, arriving to land on a half shell, radiant. Plato reasoned that her physical beauty inspired the viewer to better understand spiritual beauty.
3) Brigitte Bardot Takes a Dip
ummm. . . She is Brigitte Bardot! Need we say more. . .
4) Bo Derek's Beach Run
I do not think that any of us (especially you men who were 13 at the time) will ever forget the scene of Bo Derek running up the beach in 10. Plus I think that she might be the only person to ever make cornrows sexy.
5) Alexander McQueen's Final Collection: Plato's Atlantis
Let's push it a bit into the future with one of fashion's most creative minds. . . The late Alexander McQueen. Your genius is forever missed, but forever inspired. And here in Aquatic Fashion, we're effected all the same.
"When Charles Darwin wrote The Origin Of The Species, no one could have known that the ice cap would melt, that the waters would rise and that life on earth would have to evolve in order to live beneath the sea once more or perish. We came from water and now, with the help of stem cell technology and cloning, we must go back to it to survive." - Alexander McQueen
6) Blue Crush Makes Surfer Girls Part of Pop Culture
Kate Bosworth and the gang re-popularized surf girl wear and brought aquatic fashion back into the mainstream after Blue Crush hit the box office, making booty boardshorts a global phenomenon.
7) Halle Berry's Orange Bikini
Ok, so if you have seen the Swish Shortie wetsuits, I am pretty sure that you know how we feel about James Bond movies, and I have to say that this orange bikini might be our favorite Bond girl moment! It's all about the belts with bond girls.
