Sharkwater Creator and Evironmental Champion Rob Stewart Sports his Swish!

Creator of the revoluionary must see documentary, Sharkwater, Rob Stewart is more than a cute documentarian, he is in essence a revolution starter. His brilliant videography takes us on a global crusade to end shark finning. We at Swish LOVED this Sharkwater. We loved it so much that Victoria flew down to Mexico to give him a custom made Swish free diving suit in 2010 while he was filming whale sharks off the coast of Cozumel.

Swish Suits                       Swish Suits

Fabulous, all fabulous! Rob's film helped spark world wide pressure and movements to ban shark finning all over the globe. Rob traveled so much speaking about ocean conservation that until this last year he had not been diving in over four years! But he recently got back into his Swish Suit long enough to film his newest documentary Revolution co directed by Gus Van Sant.

Swish Suits

Rob is an ecological warrior and also a family friend for years of ours, but what excites us most here at Swish is the growing popularity of being eco we see in the Revolution movement. We often get asked why our suits are so expensive. Besides being the only women's wetsuits that are eco and made in North America, our suits are so expensive because we choose to invest in the future. And because we refuse to make crap. Because we choose mother nature over profit. Because, ultimately, we choose you. Swish Suits

I spent about 5 years traveling the world teaching scuba diving and documenting reef ecology after university from 2008-2013. It literally hurt my soul to watch ecologists get on the news talking about the devastation of giant oil spills wearing wetsuits made from petrol. We are so uninformed about what we put on or in our bodies. So I searched around Asia for two years until I found Yamamoto neoprene which produces neoprene from limestone instead of petrol. I then designed suits in over three different continents before I brought it to the USA. We are currently the only wetsuits made exclusively for women in the USA using this revolutionary material. Our suits are also the sexiest out there on the market and Yamamoto neoprene is known to be the best performance neoprene globally. We pride ourselves as being Eco, Sexy, and High Performance. Despite pressure we will not yield and make anything else lower cost/less eco despite a possibly larger market share. We will never.

We need more revolution, more caring, more responsibility to pay to clean up our environment. And this must happen now or we might not have an environment to save. The UN is predicting by 2048 there will not be anymore coral reefs left. Watch Rob Stewart's documentary, buy an eco wetsuit, stop eating meat, donate to Sea Shepard . Be willing to pay for eco products and stand for our Mother Earth!

Guest Blog: Skincare for Watersports Enthusiasts, by Emily from Sports Direct

General, Active Lifestyleswishreboot@solomongiles.comComment

Hi Swish Readers! I know that you are all very active in the water, and if you are like me, it can take a toll on your skin!  Luckily for us, Emily Matthews from Sports Direct is guest blogging for us the week on the topic "Skincare for Watersports Enthusiasts!" Enjoy!

Emily Matthews works in ecommerce at Sports Direct. After graduating in design she now creates blogs and social media content specializing in watersports, including health, beauty, nutrition and training tips and advice for regular and causal water sport enthusiasts.

Skincare for Watersports Enthusiasts

Water sports are very popular amongst all sorts of people, especially in the height of summer! There are a few ways of protecting your skin before, during and after taking part in sports such as diving, surfing and kayaking. There are no magical potions or top secret ways of ensuring your skin is left silky smooth and undamaged by the sea…but there are a few steps that it is important not too miss to avoid being left with dry, oily or burnt skin at the end of the day!

Victoria Wakeboarding

The Good

This is great news for acne sufferers or those with lingering scars. Salt water actually improves the appearance and helps to heal acne. The salt in the water gets rid of excess oil in the skin which helps the process of reducing scarring. Although, to avoid opposite effects it is vital you wash away all of the salt afterwards, as increased exposure to salt water or not completely removing the salt from your skin can see a reverse effect and cause acne! So, moderate use and exposure to salt water can work wonders for you skin!

The Bad

Water strips the healthy oils from your skin and can leave you feeling itchy and oily after being in the sea for a certain length of time. The skin realizes it is drier than it should be so starts to produce extra oils. To avoid your skin getting overly oily you should use plenty of waterproof moisturizing lotion before you head out to the waters. This acts as a protective barrier and is a quick solution to prevent your skins condition changing after your swim or time out in the sea. If the weather is hot you should also regularly apply sun cream as the salt water dries your skin out a lot faster in the sun, making you more prone to sun burn.

This may be dependent on the water activity you are part taking in, but chaffing can become a problem. This may be caused by skin on skin chaffing, fabric on skin chaffing or even hair on skin! If you are doing sports for a long period of time, chaffing being caused by one of these factors will effect your ability to finish your activity, so it is a good idea to prepare chaff prone areas by lubricating the skin with products containing either petroleum jelly or lanolin. Alternatively, waterproof medical tape also works effectively to avoid chaffing. Avoid walking around in a wet wetsuit for too long as the damp material will cause you to chaff.

The Ugly

Okay, so perhaps not ugly, but the long term affects you may see if you don’t follow this step! The salty sea water will cause you to burn quicker in the sun so the one thing to remember is to get yourself dry as soon as possible when you come out of the water! It is best to have a shower in fresh water to get rid of all the salt, but not all beaches and water sport areas have showers ready for you to use. Taking a big bottle of water is a handy alternative to rinse yourself down then dry off. Not drying yourself straight away will not only make you vulnerable to sun burn, but the long term effects will leave you with pigmented, chapped and flaky skin. This is not a good look and for regular water sport enthusiasts who don’t dry off properly when they leave the water, they will start to see signs of aging a lot early than they had perhaps planned!

Soaking up the sun in Koh Phangan

So these are just a few safety measures to think about whilst you are taking part in water activities this summer. You can still have as much fun as you want, just remember to stay topped up with sun block and dry yourself straight away!

Swish Race to 2012: Change of Mind, Body, and Spirit Swish Style!

Active Lifestyleswishreboot@solomongiles.com4 Comments

Hello all you Swish Team out there! I hope you all had amazing summers of love, fun, and water! I did! I spent my summer here in Playa del Carmen, MX, otherwise known as the best place on earth.

I spent the summer doing the legendary, Beach Workouts with Ricky Alvarez and Luis Perez: http://www.facebook.com/pages/FFit-Functional-Fitness-Entrenamiento-Funcional/135539593123864.

I also really starting to commit to my yoga practice, practicing with my teacher, Juan Carlos at Evolve Gym: http://www.facebook.com/groups/35289076299/.

I even managed to fit in some diving, curtsey of the gorgeous businesswoman Ingrid who owns Akumal Dive Shop with her husband: http://www.akumal.com/.

So, you are saying to yourselves, cool Chelsea, but why are we reading from you now that summer (the typical water season) is just wrapping up? Well, my Swish friends, you are about to witness my overhaul/ramp up/personal health boot camp…. That is if you are interested ;)…did I guilt you yet? Okay but here we go, what I will be doing is my: “Swish Race to 2012”! The premise is this:

Living here in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the center of ancient Mayan culture, has given me a respect for this culture that grew into interest and now action. Playa people have been talking about the coming of 2012 for the past three years I have been coming and living here. Mysteriously, the Mayan calendar ends on the morning of winter solstice December 21, 2012…Now here is where it gets interesting…Unaware of the Mayan calendar’s end date, Nahui-Ollin, Dennis and Terrence McKenna calculate the “end of time” from the Chinese I Ching to be December 22, 2012…Not to mention that astronomers know that in the late morning of December 21, 2012, the ecliptic (the Sun’s apparent path across the sky) will intersect with the galactic ecliptic (the projection of the Milky Way’s disc on the sky) to place the Sun at the very center, right between the solar path and that of our galaxy, an event that happens only once in the whole history of the universe….spooky eh? So follow me as I undertake an inside and out, subconscious and conscious cleansing and growing as the fateful day of the “end of time” approaches! Pretty dramatic, eh? In reality I will be continuing to research what this date really does mean, some believe this "end of time" will fulfill the Mayan prophecy of another ice age, while some believe that this date brings the dawning of a completely new era of further enlightenment. Who knows? But what I do know is that something very special is happening and I am lucky enough to be here in the center of the very culture prophesying this “end of time.”

Thus, I just haven’t been feeling like the enlightened being I should be going into 2012. He he far from it, and I just didn’t feel like I met my personal and health goals this summer. So, to rapidly change this I am excitedly taking my Vinyasa/Hatha yoga teacher training with the most amazing studio in Playa, Yoga By The Way with Ellen de Jonge and David Campos (http://www.facebook.com/yogabytheway). I am one week in and so excited and committed, and I know this is the best decision I have made in awhile ☺.

Whatever your aquatic sport and the training/health regime you practice for it, I think there will be a little something in this blog for you. Every week I will be giving you tips to a healthy living that I am doing that week or in general, along with some horoscopes, meal ideas, cool new gear, eco tips the pros use, new exercise routines that will help with your favorite aquatic sport, spiritual/energy inspiration, quotes and general tidbits to help inspire and motivate us all to keep sticking to our health and personal goals. Who couldn’t use a bit more inspiration? I will be blogging about my journey in general, cataloguing the physical, mental, spiritual, emotional changes and (hopefully) improvements I experience! I invite you all to join me, or at least read some of “Swish’s Race to 2012!”

I am going to sign off, sending each and everyone of you a huge hug of positive energy! I am leaving you all till next week with a quote one of my fellow yoga teacher trainees, the lovely Claire Beynon:

Our Favorite Movies About the Ocean

Eco Tips and Environmentswishreboot@solomongiles.com2 Comments

When you are as passionate about something as most of us are about the ocean, it tends to encompasses your whole life. Thus, it stands to reason that we love movies about the ocean here at Swish Suits.  While it is hard to discern because most films about the ocean are beautiful. . . here are our top pics!

The Big Blue

The Big Blue is a film by Luc Besson about two rival freediving champions. The film has a tranquil almost melancholy score, and has been criticized for being a bit introspective and slow. However, I really likes the cinematography and how it exhibited the competitive nature of freedivers and how those who strive for greatness are often very obsessed on the one thing they love.

"You go down to the bottom of the sea, where the water isn't even blue anymore, where the sky is only a memory, and you float there, in the silence. And you stay there, and you decide, that you'll die for them. Only then do they start coming out. They come, and they greet you, and they judge the love you have for them. If it's sincere, if it's pure, they'll be with you, and take you away forever."

Morning of the Earth

If there was ever a movie about the ocean that would make you want to surf, not to shred, but just to surf, to feel the ocean below you and to catch that one wave. . . Albert Falzon's 1972 idyllic surf movie is it. Shot in Bali, Hawaii, and Australia the scenery is stunning. I recommend to sincerely chill out, relax, and watch this epic film that will make your heart ache. . . In the most positive way.

The Cove

The Cove was one of those truly shocking films that came out of left field and opened people's eyes to horrors that they did not know existed. Most people who I talk to have a strong feeling of affection for dolphins, even those who have not been in the ocean. Maybe it is due to the extreme intelligence of these creatures that we almost mark them as our equal.  The cove depictes the slaughter of 23,000 dolphins and porpoises that happens in Japan every year.  The film had critical acclaim, even nabbing an Oscar.

No mention of underwater movies would be complete without mentioning Rob Stewart's revolutionary documentary "Sharkwater" in which he portrays a creature that we have been conditioned to hate as a noble creature worth saving. Rob's documentary shed light on the horrific shark fin trade and the dwindling shark population which is so relevant to human survival as well. This film has it all- beautiful creatures, action, adventure, danger, and above all great heart.

Disney's Oceans

Just in general a really happy and informative film with beautiful cinematography shot around the world! Grab your kids or nephews and nieces and have an adventure from the couch next time the weather is bad with this fantastic ocean kids movie!
